Case Study: Revolutionizing Mobile Maintenance: Improving Haul Truck Availability and Work Efficiency through Organizational Alignment and Leadership Development

Challenge:

Despite having a Systems of Work established, the Mobile Maintenance crew was falling short of fulfilling their obligations to the rest of the mining operation. The availability of trucks had hit a record low, while the price of commodities had soared to an unprecedented high. The mine and the concentrator were constrained by the limited availability of haul trucks. It was observed that the coordination and leadership of the front-line supervisors in Mobile Maintenance were subpar. Shifts were taking actions that boosted their own image but inadvertently led to the failure of their corresponding shifts.

Approach:

Our focus was twofold: Organizational Alignment and Leadership Development. Initially, we employed a workshop methodology to foster team alignment, rallying behind the vision of “Achieving 100% alignment towards the mobile maintenance goals of 95% haul truck availability through cooperation and trust within the mobile maintenance team.” Each front-line supervisor crafted a leadership development plan, concentrating on their growth areas to align with the team’s vision.

Throughout the engagement, individual and team coaching sessions were held, including “Live Action Coaching” where feedback was provided and actions were developed on the spot in the presence of the individual’s peers, superiors, and subordinates. The team demonstrated the courage to be vulnerable, which fostered closer relationships within the team, ensured smooth handovers, and reduced emotional reactions to unforeseen delays.

Impact:

As a result, we observed a marked improvement in cooperation, emotional intelligence, trust, and morale within the mobile maintenance team.

In addition to the noticeable improvements in leadership behaviour and organizational alignment, there were significant enhancements in operational metrics. The availability of haul trucks saw a substantial increase, rising from 75% to an impressive 94%. Furthermore, the attainment of planned work also saw a marked improvement, reaching a commendable rate of 90%.
